The Happy Monday Mindset #31

How to be a fucking badass.

Happy Monday Killers

This week I got assaulted with some straight up outrage.

(and now im outraged)

I use the term ‘Alpha’ to describe someone who I believe to be displaying Alpha characteristics.

You know, like the Alpha of an animal pack.

Fairly straight forward, I believe.

That is, in my own definition, someone who is taking control of their reality – someone who is committing some legitimate badass-ery.

I fucking love to see it – seeing people alpha the shit out of whatever their doing is fucking amazing.

It doesn’t have to be physical at all, either.

My man, Edgar, is an IT alpha.

Kat is learning to control her circumstances, and is becoming the alpha of her own life by learning to say no.

Cam is re-taking control of his reality & alpha-ering his way through each week – one workout at a time.

It’s cool as fuck & I am beyond privileged to be a part of it for others.

But here is where I got stumped for a double

(strap yourselves in, I’m still in shock)

I have been sat down & told that using the term ‘Alpha’ is offensive to some as it promotes the idealism of male dominance in society.

Oh fucking yeet.

Not the conversation I was hoping to have I can bloody tell you.

So, let’s get in and define it shall we, Muppet.

alpha

/ˈalfə/

noun

noun: alpha; plural noun: alphas

1.

the first letter of the Greek alphabet ( Α, α ), transliterated as ‘a’.

denoting the first of a series of items or categories, e.g. forms of a chemical compound.

modifier n

ZOOLOGY•SOCIOLOGY

denoting the dominant animal or human in a particular group.

“the pack is a tightly knit, highly organized group, led by an alpha wolf”

INFORMAL

denoting a person who has a dominant role or position within a particular sphere.

“take turns cooking for each other if one of you is too much of an alpha chef”

ASTRONOMY

the first (typically the brightest) star in a constellation.

noun: Alpha

“Alpha Orionis”

relating to alpha decay or alpha particles.

“an alpha emitter”

(Ok, I deleted some of the definitions around Alpha – turns out there is a lot)

However, there are no gender specifics around the word Alpha.

I was told that it is a male characteristic & by telling women that they are displaying male characteristics can be offensive.

Nope, sorry.

No.

What you just said is actually offensive.

Don’t be bringing your insecurities over here.

I work with some strong as fuck ladies, making big lifts & hitting PBs – they are the fucking leader of whatever pack they choose.

Being an Alpha isn’t about being a man of a woman

(Or whatever you chose to identify as, I support you)

Alpha is a mindset – a sense of Being, if you will.

Being an Alpha is not displaying cunt like behaviour to everyone else, that is just being a cunt.

Having an Alpha mindset is about shouldering the burden of Being, and carrying that shit well.

(For ore on what this means, hit me up or read ‘12 rules, an antidote to chaos’ by Jordan Peterson)

An Alpha is someone who takes responsibility for the control of his/her own life. Someone who allows life to happen FOR them, not to them.

The crazy thing is – we can all be this. We can all have this mindset.

But we don’t.

Anyone can be someone who either considers themselves, or is considered to be an ‘Alpha’ by others.

It is a choice you make every damn day.

You can choose who you identify yourself as.

You see it with people who are quitting smoking all the time.

When asked if they would like a smoke, those who answered with ‘No, I’ trying to quit smoking’ have a MUCH lower quit rate than those who respond with, ‘No thank you, I’m not a smoker’.

This isn’t fuckery – this is real.

(This has actually been studied, but I can’t remember the study nor do I have time to find it soz)

Who you identify as plays a HUGE role in who you become.

I get it, it’s hard to identify as something you currently are not.

But that’s the process, isn’t it.

Think to your first job, with your big fancy title.

Did you deserve that title to start with?

Probably not.
I bloody didn’t.

But as time went on, the more you identify with it, the more you stepped into that role.

It’s the same for any other role you would like to step into.

Want to get in shape? Cool, start identifying yourself as someone who enjoys exercise & tracking their caloric intake. .

Want to be a badass? Fuck yeah, identify yourself as someone who dances to their own tune & lays their own law down.

Want to be seen as a social butterfly? Amazing. Identify yourself as someone who is interested in other people & want to find out about them.

Personally, I identify myself as someone who wants to be better.

At everything.

It’s why I continue to lift, read, learn & spend HOURS of my time researching ways to be better.

I IDENTIFY as someone who just wants to keep learning & keep getting better as time goes on.

So, that’s your choice today, and tomorrow, and the next day.

You can chose to identify as someone who isn’t in control of themselves, their feels, their behaviors.

OR

YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE A MOTHERFUCKING BADASS WHO GETS SHIT DONE

I’ll give you one more choice today.

Take control of yourself & join my online exercise & nutritional programming company for your own self development, or don’t.

You can choose to identify as someone who wants to get better – and I can provide the professional help to get you there.

The happy Monday Mindset #31

Being a badass > having a bad ass.

How to be a fucking badass 101

Happy Monday Killers

This week I was lucky enough to see some of my clients seriously turn it on.

Like, I was thinking, ‘Holy shit. ________ is becoming a fucking badass’

It is incredible to see.

(Kinda scary too, tbh)

To see anyone go from timid/not so keen – to a full blown take-control-of-the-situation-and-fucking-kill-it is fucking cccococoooooOOOOOoOOOOooolllllll..

Yeah sure, muscles are cool.

Fat loss is fucking awesome.
(and the best thing you could do health wise)

But seeing someone become an Alpha of their own life – that shit lights me on FIRE.

Not all gainz have to be physical.

In fact, the best gainz are often not physical.

The mental gainz that come from seriously taking control of your life & accepting responsibility are the most transformative – without a doubt.

It made me think;

  1. Becoming is better than Being (goes without saying, be more concerned with your current trajectory than situation all that business)
  2. Being a badass > than having a bad ass.

In the case of the clients who have turned a corner recently (mental gainz yoooooo), they have all made great changes to their body composition.

Massive weight loss (35kg in one case – yeet), strength building, muscle gains & toning has all been achieved.

But this is not the wins that these clients are talking about.

They are smiling more.

(Fucking smiling more. What could be more important, ja feelin me?)

They are talking about the next obstacle to overcome, the next goal to achieve.

They are practicing their technical abilities more.

They are paying more attention to how they talk to themselves.

They are paying more attention to how they treat themselves.

They are focusing on the process of self development, not the outcome.

They outcome is fucking awesome, don’t get me wrong.

But it is merely a by-product of Becoming better – which all starts in the mind.

It started with them by taking responsibility for their circumstances.

Realising that you’re not happy with yourself is a hard step to take, because it means assigning fault to SOMEONE for your position.

(That person is you, but only some people will blame themselves with positive intentions)

Then, they attempted to some something about it – and failed.

Failing is not the important step to focus on in this situation – it’s what they did next that matters.

They tried again.

And again.

And again.

Finally, they attempted one more time – and found the method that works for them.

Luckily for me, that step involved me.

(It doesn’t always involve me, or a personal training at all in fact. I’m not here saying I can solve everyones’ issues. I work for some people, and I’m sure there are people that would be better off with another trainer – I am not trying to be the best option for everyone, that’s impossible) (but I’m pretty fucking cool, too)

The key here is that they reached a point where the need for change was greater than the want to stay the same.

And then, they kept fucking trying.

Then, they saw the first bit of progress.

Now, they understand the process.

Instead of aiming to lose 10kg in one go, aim to lose 1kg. Then do it 10 times.

It’s time & consistency that leads all change. It’s not 6 week blocks of intensity

(this is why I turn my nose up at every online trainers fucking 6 week challenges. 6 weeks of balls to the wall does not teach you how to make this habit a sustainable one to suit your lifestyle, it merely teaches you how to burn the fuck out)

This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Yes, summer is coming up.

Yes, it’s going to be hot.

Yes, you’re going to want to wear less clothing.

Don’t be a wank – don’t be a fair weather athlete.

Look for small habits to introduce in your life, with the intention of keeping them forever.

An Alpha is someone who takes responsibility for the control  of his/her own life. Soeone who allows life to happen FOR them, not TO them.

The crazy thing is – we can all be this. We can all have this mindset.

But we all don’t.

Anyone can be someone who either considers themselves, or is considered to be an ‘Alpha’ by others.
